Hall Tree
The basic idea for a hall tree is pretty straightforward: a high-backed bench with hooks for hanging coats and storage underneath. Within that fundamental concept there's room for almost limitless variation. I designed this hall tree for a client who had a tight corner and was looking make use of it.
Making good use of inside corners is a consistent thorn in the side of architects, furnituremakers and homeowners. I echoed the design of the frame surrounding the storage cubbies on the face of the short leg of the bench, but filled in the opening with a panel. Part of the bench top is hinged to allow top access to the space below.
I built a matching bench to go with the hall tree. It is a separate piece, but it uses the same materials and finishes. It visually continues the short arm of the hall tree under a window to the front door of the house, providing a place to sit and take off your shoes, then leading the user to the adjacent storage of the hall tree.
