Contemporary Pine Bookshelf
Bookshelves often can straddle the line between furniture and built-ins. If you love books, you'll want to make the most space for them in a design that's harmonious with the room they'll live in. Older or collectible books might suggest a bookshelf in a style that complements their covers. For these reasons, bookshelves lend themselves to custom work to match your tastes, your space, and your book collection.
Long one of New England's great treasures, Eastern White Pine’s size, strength, and lightness have made it a prized material for hundreds of years. I designed this bookshelf to take advantage of the width of Eastern White Pine readily available near me in Vermont. The wide boards make a bookshelf that holds larger books with ease, and sourcing the material locally keeps money in the local economy.
Originally a barn rafter, the reclaimed hand-hewn hemlock accent piece recalls New England's early logging and building history. In the absence of a local sawmill or ready transport to (and from!) the same, builders squared timbers at the building site with a broad axe. This process leaves a distinctive texture that contrasts with the milled and sanded surfaces we're accustomed to.
